The annual HIMSS Conference plans to present educational sessions with the themes of innovation, impact, outcomes, and onward

As 2013 became 2014, Healthcare Technology Online transformed to Health IT Outcomes. But we aren’t alone if focusing on outcomes in the new year - the annual HIMSS Conference will be presenting over 300 educational sessions with outcomes at the heart of many.

The educational presentations this year can be grouped into four major themes: innovation, impact, outcomes, and onward. Or, as the HIMSS website puts it, “HIMSS14 Education to Focus On ‘People, Impacts, and Outcomes.’”

“We’re focusing on the people and processes that lead to achieving and maintaining the effective use of health IT to truly transform health and health care,” said JoAnn Klinedinst, HIMSS Vice President of Professional Development. “That’s what really drives us when planning educational offerings.”

The educational sessions will feature discussion of patient engagement, mobile health, interoperability, the value of health IT and business, and clinical analytics. As the website explains, there will be presentations on the shift to accountable care, health information exchanges, improving supply chain dynamics, supporting rural health care, medication management, remote monitoring, and more.

“Discussions like these are making IT safer,” said Klinedinst. “We’re studying when things go wrong. What safety challenges are out there, and what models might we learn from other high-risk industries? People don’t want to talk about this (within their organizations). We’re offering discussions on how to make healthcare safer and what challenges and solutions are out there as related to health IT. It’s very exciting.”
